Garrett Gibson is a performing percussionist and music educator in the DFW
Metroplex. Trained as both a classical percussionist and an instrumental music
educator, Garrett has taught and performed in the majority of the southeastern United
States, Texas, and Indiana. He now teaches high school band and percussion in
Dallas, TX, while also maintaining a steady performance career with the Lone Star Wind
Orchestra and several small ensembles in Denton.
Originally from Memphis, TN, Garrett began taking private percussion lessons at
the age of four. Moving through school as a practicing music student, Garrett made
the All-State Tennessee Wind Ensemble and/or Symphony Orchestra all four years of
high school. Upon graduation, Garrett followed a long-standing family tradition of
attending Mississippi State University, majoring in Music Education. During his time at
MSU, Garrett spent four years on the snare line in the Famous Maroon Band while also
serving in the Wind Ensemble, three years of which he served as principal
percussionist.
After graduating from MSU, Garrett relocated to Denton, TX, to pursue his
Masters' degree in Percussion Performance at the University of North Texas. During
his time at UNT, Garrett performed with the University of North Texas Wind Symphony,
serving as principal percussionist for both years. Garrett also had the privilege of
performing with the 2:00 Steel Band, the Gamelan Ensemble, the UNT Percussion
Ensemble, and studied under Mark Ford, Christopher Deane, Paul Rennick, and Ed
Soph.
After graduating with a masters' degree in Percussion Performance and a minor
in Ethnomusicology, Garrett continues to live in Denton, TX with his wife Rachel and
their three dogs, Lucy, Herbie, and Suzy. In addition to his teaching career, Garrett has
taken up arranging, completing marching shows for high schools in the DFW area's
2021-2022 school year and classical arrangements for mixed percussion ensemble. In
the next year, Garrett hopes to establish his own arranging company, serving as
arranger and publisher in hopes to spread his musical ideas.
