  •    A. Seminar Course Description

An intensive 5 day overview of the marimba concentrating on technique, repertoire and musical issues. We focus on memorization, one-handed rolls, tone production, musicianship, repertoire, and very specific information on how to improve your technique. Course also includes overview of all major grips, an intensive study of Stevens technique (all Stevens stroke types, mechanics of movement, shifting, interval changing, one-handed rolls), history, acoustics, solo and ensemble literature, and practice techniques. The camp hours are 8am - 5pm (refer to item I) with closing ceremonies on the last day starting at 7pm.

      B. Requirements

Motivation, rather than present level of achievement, is the prime requisite. Applicants must be in high school or Current Year graduate to participate in the program. (Professional instructors see item G) Apply by completing and returning the application form, your deposit, and a list of past and current repertoire. Email confirmation will be sent when the application and deposit is received. A mailout or email outlining detailed camp information will be sent after the application deadline.

      C. Instruments

Marimbists may bring a marimba so they have access to a keyboard at all times. Although highly encouraged, it is not required. The seminar provides an adequate number of keyboard percussion instruments. Most band programs will allow check-out of school owned instruments. If you would like to transport your marimba to the seminar prior to the start of the camp, please contact Michael A. Hernandez

      D. Performances

There will be two performances of note the week of the camp.

    1. Leigh Howard Stevens Evening of Marimba Concert

      G. Instructor Clinic Camp Track: Tuition $175

With all camp instructional sessions closed to non-camp personnel, the LHS High School SMS is excited to offer a clinic track to professional instructors. For a tuition of $175, instructors may attend all of the scheduled student masterclasses offered by Leigh Howard Stevens during the camp. This track is ideal for professionals seeking reinforcement or additional information to utilize in their classes and studio. Note that this does not include hands-on instruction, only clinic protocol.

      H. Application Deadline
Deadline for application including completed application form and deposit is June 8, 2012.

      I. Placement Audition

    Audition Procedure / Considerations

  • Do your best. This camp is designed to improve upon your aptitude level of marimba performance.

  • You are being evaluated against a standard, not each other. All audition decisions will be based upon the individual's facilitation of the Steven's Grip and the Steven's philosophy of efficiency of movement, not degree of literature difficulty or demand.

  • Auditions will be in the presence of a panel of judges while the rest of the camp members are in attendance. I.E. The auditions will not be on a one-on-one basis.

  • Audition requirements will be sent to all applicants upon enrollment. Audition will include a prepared piece:

Perform :30-:45 of a 4-mallet marimba solo of       your choice; Select an excerpt that best       shows your ability level

  • Every camp member should be familiar with the Leigh Howard Steven's book: Method of Movement (MoM)

  • The camp requires having the MoM while attending the LHS High School SMS.

  •     J. Camp Check-In

Camp check-in begins at 8:00am, the first day of the seminar, with placement auditions beginning afterwards.

Detailed audition information will be sent within an email update. (see item B)

The camp ends with a 7:00pm Closing Ceremony Concert with instrument check-out at its conclusion.

Contact Michael A. Hernandez to make arrangements for instrument transportation other than post-concert, the last day of the seminar.
